Remote camping water planning: build your own worksheet

Plan remote camping water from measured household use, manufacturer capacities, trip tasks and a deliberate reserve instead of relying on one generic daily number.

Remote camping water planning should not begin with a universal litres-per-person figure. Climate, health, food, children, pets, washing, equipment and trip length change consumption, and a tank’s advertised capacity may not equal the usable amount delivered at the tap.

A better method is to measure your group, list every planned use, confirm the trailer’s usable capacity, then add a reserve linked to the specific failure scenarios. The worksheet below produces a transparent plan you can test before travel.

Start with four numbers you can defend

Do not reduce drinking to save a weak plan. Adjust duration, resupply, activities or carried capacity while remaining within every trailer and tow-vehicle mass limit.

Measure a realistic baseline

Run a home or local-camp trial in conditions as close as practical to the trip. Give each person a labelled bottle or measured container and record drinking separately from cooking. Include the full day, not only time at camp.

For children, older travellers, pregnancy, medication or medical conditions, seek appropriate health advice. Hot weather and strenuous activity can change needs. The worksheet is a logistics tool, not medical guidance.

Repeat the trial rather than trusting one unusual day. Record the conditions so the result is not detached from temperature and activity.

Inventory every water task

Create one row for each use:

  • drinking;
  • cooking and food preparation;
  • hot drinks;
  • washing dishes and utensils;
  • hand and personal hygiene;
  • essential cleaning;
  • pet drinking and care;
  • equipment-specific use;
  • any water required by an emergency or first-aid plan.

Measure the camping method, not the household habit. A basin, spray bottle or wipe system may use a different amount, but it must still meet hygiene and equipment requirements. Never count natural water, campground tanks or taps as potable unless the responsible authority explicitly says so and the current status supports it.

Use a simple worksheet

For each category, calculate:

measured amount per unit × number of units × number of days

A unit might be a person-day, meal, pet-day or equipment cycle. Keep the categories visible.

Add the planned totals only after every row is filled. If the group says “that comes from the tank,” it still belongs in the worksheet.

Design the reserve from scenarios

A percentage copied from elsewhere can hide the actual risk. List plausible disruptions:

  • departure delayed by a closed road;
  • planned resupply unavailable or not potable;
  • leak or pump failure makes part of the system unusable;
  • hot conditions increase drinking needs;
  • an extra day is required to use a safe alternative route;
  • one container is contaminated or damaged.

Choose which events the plan must cover and calculate the additional amount using your measured baseline. Keep at least part of the reserve in a physically separate food-grade container so one tank or plumbing failure does not remove all water.

The reserve must remain within ATM, GTM, GVM, GCM, axle, tyre, towbar and coupling limits. Water is heavy; weigh the packed combination rather than treating capacity as permission to fill every container.

Confirm usable capacity

Check the tank, plumbing and trailer documentation. Then perform a controlled test:

  1. Start with the system in the manufacturer’s specified condition.
  2. Add a measured quantity without exceeding ratings.
  3. Operate taps and pumps as they will be used.
  4. Measure what can actually be delivered.
  5. Note any amount retained because of pickup position, slope or system protection.
  6. Inspect for leaks and secure every container for travel.

Do not use the test to modify or bypass the system. If the result differs materially from the specification, have it inspected.

Plan access and resupply honestly

For every intended water source, record the manager, current potability statement, operating hours, access conditions and fallback. “Tap shown on a map” is not enough. Services can be shut down, treatment advice can change and an access road can close.

The road-closure checklist should be connected to water planning: a closed route can lengthen the trip or remove a resupply. Check Bureau of Meteorology and emergency warnings because heat, fire and flood can change both consumption and access.

NSW National Parks advises campers to take adequate food and water and to tell someone their plan. NSW SES likewise tells holidaymakers to understand local risks and prepare essential items. Use those principles to set the trip-specific buffer.

Manage water during the trip

Record actual use at the same time each day. Compare remaining measured capacity with:

distance and time to a verified supply + exit time + intact reserve

Set a decision trigger before departure. For example, the group may leave or change plans when the measured balance reaches the amount needed for the safe exit plus the reserved contingency. The trigger should not depend on persuading everyone to drink less.

Store drinking water in clean, suitable containers, protected from fuel, chemicals and damage. Follow container and system manufacturers’ cleaning and storage instructions.

A final departure check

Before towing away, confirm:

  • the worksheet reflects the current people, pets, weather and duration;
  • usable capacity was measured rather than assumed;
  • carried mass fits every rating;
  • containers and tanks are secured;
  • resupply points were verified with official information;
  • reserve scenarios and the exit trigger are written down;
  • the route and emergency contacts are saved offline;
  • a trusted contact knows the itinerary.

The strength of a remote water plan is not one impressive capacity figure. It is a chain of measured inputs, protected redundancy and early decisions that remain valid when a tap, road or forecast changes.
